Morphology General Habit
Perennial herb, with 1–many stems from a horizontal woody rootstock; stems erect, up to 1.5 m tall, simple or branched above, 4-angular, strongly ribbed, glabrous.
Morphology Leaves
Leaves mostly 1-foliolate, the uppermost reduced to undifferentiated linear structures; leaflets up to 5–15 × 0.3–2 cm, mostly linear to attenuate-lanceolate, the upper ones the narrower, the lowermost oblanceolate to oblong-obovate and smaller again, mostly long-apiculate, rather leathery, glabrous or with a few scattered hairs beneath; lateral nerves steeply ascending, the second pair running near the margin far into the upper half; petiole 1–3 mm long; stipules 3–10 mm long, linear-subulate.
Morphology Reproductive morphology Inflorescences
Racemes laxly 6–16-flowered; bracts linear-subulate, 1.5–3 mm long; bracteoles variously inserted on the pedicel, smaller.
Morphology Reproductive morphology Flowers Calyx
Calyx 7–8 mm long, glabrous; lobes narrowly attenuate-triangular, nearly twice as long as the tube, becoming reflexed.
Morphology Reproductive morphology Flowers Corolla
Standard elliptic, pale violet inside and marginally outside, yellowish-brown with deep brown veins medially outside, glabrous; wings deep violet, shorter than the keel; keel 1.8–2.1 cm long, angular, sharply rounded near the base with a long practically straight beak.
Morphology Reproductive morphology Fruits
Young legumes shortly stipitate, oblong-ellipsoid, sparsely pubescent.
Morphology Reproductive morphology Seeds
Seeds not seen.
