The native range of this subspecies is S. Somalia to Tanzania. It is an annual or subshrub and grows primarily in the seasonally dry tropical biome.

Note
The Somali specimens have smaller flowers and longer, more spreading hairs on stems and leaves than normally found in subsp. zimmermannii. Further study of the Somali populations is desirable.
