The native range of this species is Mexico to Tropical America, Tropical Africa to Namibia, Madagascar. It is a subshrub or shrub and grows primarily in the seasonally dry tropical biome. It is has social uses, as a medicine and for food.

Biogeografic region: Amazonia, Andean, Guiana Shield, Caribbean, Orinoquia. Elevation range: 25–1820 m a.s.l. Native to Colombia. Colombian departments: Amazonas, Antioquia, Arauca, Caquetá, Casanare, Cauca, Córdoba, Cundinamarca, Guainía, Guaviare, Huila, Magdalena, Meta, Nariño, Santander, Tolima, Valle del Cauca, Vichada.
