Gabonius ngouniensis was previously placed in the genus Hymenostegia where, belong based on evidence from morphology and molecular-based analysis, it does not belong (Mackinder et al. 2013). Gabonius is closely related, possibly sister, to the monotypic genus Micklethwaitia and together with Scorodophloeus and Annea, the four genera form the Scorodophloeus clade
