Segregated from Hymenostegia sensu lato by Mackinder & Wieringa (2013) based on morphology and pollen differences which are supported by phylogenetic analyses. Annea is sister to the genus Scorodophloeus and one of four genera (the other two being Gabonius and Micklethwaitia) that together form the Scorodophloeus clade (Mackinder et al 2013).
