The native range of this species is Caribbean, Venezuela to W. South America. It is a shrub or tree and grows primarily in the seasonally dry tropical biome. It is used to treat unspecified medicinal disorders and as a medicine.

Biogeografic region: Andean, Caribbean, Orinoquia. Elevation range: 0–2144 m a.s.l. Native to Colombia. Colombian departments: Antioquia, Atlántico, Bolívar, Boyacá, Casanare, Cesar, Cundinamarca, Huila, La Guajira, Magdalena, Valle del Cauca.
