Perennial herb with several stiffly erect often unbranched stems from a woody rootstock, 0·3–0·9 m. tall.

Leaflets 3, paler beneath, mostly deflexed, elliptic, 2–5 cm. long, 1–2 cm. wide, acute, cuneate, pilose to densely hairy on both surfaces or only on the nerves beneath, sparsely glandular above, densely glandular beneath; primary venation raised beneath; tertiary venation reticulate; leaflet-surface often plicate; petiole 0·7–1·5 cm. long; rhachis ± 1 mm. long; petiolules 1–2 mm. long; stipules leaf-opposed, mostly brown, lanceolate, 1·3–1·5 cm. long, 3–3·5(–5) mm. wide, hairy, closely veined.

Corolla partly hidden by the densely hairy longer bracts and scarcely shorter calyces; standard reddish brown outside, yellow striped with reddish-brown inside, oblong or obovate, 6·5–9 mm. long, 3·5–4 mm. wide, glabrescent or very sparsely hairy, glandular; wings and keel orange-yellow.
