Morphology General Habit
Shrubs or trees, 2 - 6 m tall
Morphology Leaves Stipules
Stipules 6 - 30 x 2.1 - 17.8 mm, falcate, falcate-ovate to orbicular, glabrous, flexible; leaves with petiole 2.3 - 5.5 mm long, glabrous; blade 5.2 - 20 x 1.9 - 6.5 cm, chartaceous, elliptic, base cuneate to cordate, apex acute to acuminate, glabrous, venation prominent beneath, marginal veins not evident, margin entire
Morphology Reproductive morphology Inflorescences
Racemes aggregated into terminal fascicles or panicles 1 - 5.7 cm long, c. 4- 14 flowers per raceme, axis c. 0.8 mm diam., fulvous to rufous-pubescent; bracts 0.4 - 1.7 x 0.3 - 0.9 mm, deltoid, pubescent externally; bracteoles c. 0.6-1.2 x 0.2-0.4 mm, subulate to deltoid, pubescent, attached halfway along the pedicel; pedicel 6 - 15 x 0.4 - 0.6 mm, fulvous to rufous-pubescent; buds 7.2 - 10 x 3 - 3.9 mm, asymmetric-elliptic, apex acuminate, pubescent
Morphology Reproductive morphology Flowers
Calyx spathaceous (1- lobed), chartaceous, glabrous at the base on inner face, and villose to lanate at the apex; petals 5, pink to lilac, claw 0.5 - 1.1 x 0.6 - 0.9 mm, blade 6.6 - 7.7 x 4.6 - 5.4 mm, vexillum orbicular, the others elliptic; stamens 8- 11, filaments 1.2- 1.9 x 0.5 mm, glabrous, anthers 3.9 - 6.1 x 0.4 - 0.6 mm, subulate, apex mucronate, sparsely pilose; gynoecium with stipe 1.6 - 2.4 mm long, sericeous, ovary 4 - 5.2 x 1.5 - 2.5 mm, symmetric, elliptic, sericeous, c. 7- 10 ovulate, style 1.8 punctiform, glabrous
Morphology Reproductive morphology Fruits
Fruit globose, 1.6 - 2.5 x 0.9 - 1.5 cm when mature, seed oblong.
Distribution
Zollernia glabra is restricted to the Atlantic coastal zone from the state of Bahia to the north of São Paulo
Ecology
According to Mansano & Tozzi (1999b), is a species of the Atlantic Rain Forest (Floresta Pluvial Tropical Atlântica)
Phenology
Flowering from December to April, collected in fruit in September.
Note
Zollernia glabra is characterised by having racemes in terminal fascicles or panicles. It differs from Z. ilicifolia in having flexible stipules, leaves without an evident marginal vein, generally entire leaf margins and inflorescences exclusively terminal (vs. stipules rigid, leaves with marginal veins evident and generally with serrate margins, and the inflorescences axillary and terminal).
