S America, most diverse and numerous in the Amazon basin extending N into the Orinoco valley and the Guianas

Largely equivalent to 'Genus D' of Nielsen (1981a); placed by Barneby & Grimes (1996) in their 'Inga-alliance'. Nectaries occur on floral bracts in most species and are unique to the genus in neotropical Ingeae
